You know, I tried your idea this morning before I started working on my latest writing endeavor. I liked it, it really helped. And your kick-ass metaphor about running was cool too, because once I was done I felt like I had exercised physically as well and had another danish with my coffee. :)

FYI: That comment didn't format like I expected - the second paragraph is Lehane, the third paragraph is me.

I carry a laminated copy of this Dennis Lehane quote around in my wallet:

The great moment is finishing the first draft. You nailed it down. You've got something to work with. What was in your head is now on the page in some tangible form with a beginning, middle, and an end. And you still have all the freedom that subsequent drafts give you to make it look a lot prettier. The sadness, maybe, comes in when you've finished that final draft. That's when "What next?" pops into your head. You had real purpose for a year or two, and now you're back to square one. Still, that moment of finishing the first draft and looking at those pages stacked up -- This exists because you do -- that's pretty sweet.

I've been revising a lot lately, and haven't finished any first drafts for a while. I might just have to knock off a quick something to get that rush you referred to.

I just preordered Demons. I am quite excited. I hope it's more of a cohesive collection as opposed to a 'Best Of,' which is what Bluebirds felt like.

I share your admiration for "Bluebirds." I'm really looking forward to "Demons in the Spring." Did you ever preorder it? I'm expecting it to be good, since every one of his books is, but I'm especially interested to see whether I'll like it more or less than "Bluebirds."

Sorry to hear that Ben didn't actually launch into a tirade - that might have been a YouTube video for the ages. I've got this great mental image of the scene, although given Ben's physical characteristics the tirade is more George Costanza than Patti Smith.

Wow, thanks so much for making me sound badass. With the bad back, arthritic knee and kidney stones I couldn't feel less badass, so that was a quite a boost.
