I posted an announcement a few weeks ago that I am going to start a little segment aptly and not that cleverly titled Book Of the Month. To kick this little shindig off, I chose Ben Tanzer’s Lucky Man, which coincidentally, I am reviewing this month for 63 Channels. Due to the review, I don’t want to say too much here, but I will say Tanzer’s debut novel is sparkling, a coming-of-age story with new life breathed into it.
Lucky Man follows four friends from the tail-end of their high school days, through college and beyond. While sticking to the tried and true coming-of-age hi-jinks such as drugs, alcohol, and sex, Lucky Mantakes quite a few forays into much darker territory. Written in the styles of Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying or The Sound And The Furry, Lucky Manis fun read no doubt, but with something much deeper lying just below the surface. Click Tanzer’s blog link at the side of this page to check it out. Enjoy. ‘Till next month…
PS. Ben Tanzer’s story “What We Thought We Knew” is forthcoming in spring ‘08 in RAGAD 6…
Good stuff!
Great choice! However, I am still awaiting my copy of Lucky Man from Amazon (4 to 6 weeks!), but I do know from talking with Ben that he is truly a great guy. I look forward to Ragad 6 and I hope to make it to the reading in September.
In case you missed it here is my interview with Ben:
